Kindergarten Dual Language Lottery Process
2025-2026 Registration and Lottery for incoming kindergarteners opens 1/31/25
The North Clackamas Dual Language Immersion Program is a lottery based admission for incoming kindergarten students. This school lottery system is a random selection process for determining which students will attend. The lottery system aims to give all applicants an equal chance of being admitted. A school lottery system only occurs when more students apply for admission than can be admitted.
Mission Statement
The goal of the North Clackamas School District Dual Language Immersion Program is to increase the academic achievement of English Learners while promoting multilingualism and affirming the diverse identities, languages, races, and cultural heritages of students and families in the North Clackamas community.
Dual Language Immersion Program Goals
The goals of dual language immersion programs are to develop bilingualism & biliteracy, academic achievement, and cross-cultural competencies for all students.
Dual Language Immersion in Grades K-5
- Approximately 60% of students’ first language is Spanish and 40% of students’ first language is English
- Native English speakers and native Spanish speakers learn from each other
- Instruction is aligned to Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
Students begin in Kindergarten receiving 80% of instruction in Spanish and 20% in English. Gradually students receive more English instruction until it is approximately 50% Spanish and 50% English in 4th and 5th grade. - Only one language is used at a time; instruction is not translated.
- Formal literacy instruction begins in Spanish.
- Bus transportation is provided to students’ assigned to the Dual Language Immersion school.

Inmersión Dual en los grados K - 5

Middle DLI Program Information
Inmersión Dual en los grados 6 - 8
Los estudiantes de los Programas de Inmersión Dual tienen la opción de continuar sus estudios en español en la Escuela Secundaria Alder Creek y la Escuela Secundaria Rowe. Los estudiantes en el Programa de Inmersión Dual asisten 3 de 10 períodos de instrucción en español. Las clases que se ofrecen en español son Artes del Lenguaje y Estudios Sociales. Dual Language Immersion in Grades 6-8
Students have the option to continue their studies in Spanish at Alder Creek School and Rowe Middle School. Students in the Dual Immersion Program attend 3 of 10 periods of instruction in Spanish. Classes offered in Spanish are Language Arts and Social Studies. These classes are aligned to the content standards for the grade level, while improving students' abilities to read, write, and speak in Spanish. Latino culture and history are integrated into instruction.

High School DLI Program Information
Inmersión Dual en los grados 9-12
Los estudiantes del Programa de Inmersión Dual de la Escuela Secundaria Alder Creek tienen la opción de continuar sus estudios en español en la Escuela Preparatoria Rex Putnam. En este momento los estudiantes de 9º grado y 10º grado pueden tomar una clase avanzada de lectoescritura en español como parte del programa de Inmersión Dual. Dual Language Immersion in Grades 9-12
Students in the Alder Creek Middle School Dual Immersion Program have the option to continue their studies in Spanish at Rex Putnam High School. Currently 9th grade and 10th grade students can take an advanced Spanish literacy class as part of the Dual Immersion program. In grades 11 and 12, students can participate in International Baccalaureate (IB) Spanish as a World Language classes.

Why should I consider enrolling my child in a Dual Language Immersion program?
There are many benefits to participating in a Dual Language Immersion program, including:
- Students attain high levels of proficiency in their first language as well as a second language. Being bilingual has many cognitive, academic, social, and career benefits.
- Studies show that students, especially English Learners (students whose first language is Spanish or a language other than English), attain greater academic success in reading, writing, and speaking than students in other educational models (Thomas and Collier, 2009).
- Students gain cross-cultural awareness and understanding. Additionally, students whose first language is Spanish develop positive attitudes about their own linguistic and cultural identity that allows them to better connect with their parents, relatives, and community.

How long will it take for my child to become bilingual and biliterate?
It can take 5 - 7 years for a student to attain proficiency in a second language. Each child is unique, and it may take longer for some students. It’s normal for a student to start out slowly learning their second language. Typically by the time students reach the middle school level, they will be ready for more advanced language study in both languages.

¿Cómo puedo apoyar a mi hijo/a en casa?
- Hable, lea, cante, y juegue con su hijo/a tan frecuentemente como sea posible - en su lengua materna y otros idiomas que conozca. Hablar y leer con los niños todos los días en su primer idioma construye sus habilidades de vocabulario y de alfabetización. How can I support my child at home?
- Talk, read, sing, and play with your child as often as possible - in both your native language and other languages you know. Talking and reading with children everyday in their first language builds their vocabulary and literacy skills. Show that reading is fun, and limit your child’s TV and screen time.
- Encourage a “growth mindset” - help your child adapt the mindset that they can learn anything with enough effort and practice. Teach them that we learn and grow from challenges and mistakes. Praise your child’s hard work and academic growth.
- Be patient - understand that language acquisition takes time. It can takes several years for a child to achieve proficiency in a second language. Don’t force them to speak in their second language in front of others, and don’t expect them to be able to use complete sentences right away.
- Be proud - there are many benefits to being bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. Help your child maintain enthusiasm and understand how fortunate they are to be in the program.
- Have good attendance - when students are not at school they miss important instruction and language practice. Do your best to get your child to school on time every day.
- Ensure your child is well rested - learning in a second language can be tiring. Make sure your child gets enough sleep each night so that they are alert and ready to learn each day.
- Provide a healthy diet and promote exercise - kids’ brains and bodies need a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. They also need to exercise daily - walk, run, ride a bike, play, dance, play sports - anything active!
- Promote multiculturalism - teach your child to appreciate other cultures and be sensitive to others who are different from themselves.
- Learn outside of school - visit the local library, zoos, parks, and museums in your community. Students gain knowledge and vocabulary from these real-world experiences.
- Be involved - we encourage parents to have open communication with the teacher and school, attend parent-teacher conferences and special events at school, and volunteer in the classroom if possible. You are an important part of our school community!

Join our team! North Clackamas is always seeking K-12 bilingual teacher candidates for our Dual Language Immersion Program. We value the unique skills and knowledge required by our bilingual teachers. Our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teachers receive a stipend to compensate for the extra time and work it takes to teach in two languages. We also provide continual support for our DLI teachers, including professional development, instructional coaching, equity training, resources, and collaborative meetings.
